On Tendency and Modernization of Traditional Funeral During the Republic of China

民国时期社会面临着由传统向现代的转型,传统丧葬原有的二元结构发生了裂变与异变,丧葬中孝的实质愈发流于形式,尤其平民世俗型丧葬暴露出诸多问题,呈现出承旧制、随意化和奢侈化的无序发展趋向,亟需改革与转型。南京国民政府力图在保持传统丧葬崇孝的精神内涵不变的前提下,对其进行现代化改造。

During the Republic of China, the society was confronted with the transformation from tradition to modernity. The original dual structure of traditional funeral was fissioned and mutated. The essence of filial piety in the funeral was becoming more and more formality, especially the common burial of civilians, which showed old systematical, random and luxury - oriented disorders. There was urgent need for reform and transformation. The Nanjing National Government tried to modernize funeral by keeping its traditional spirit.
