Nigeria is the largest country in Africa both in terms of population and economy, in its multi - ethnic and multi -lingual situation, language policy and planning play a very important role in promoting national harmony and economic development. The paper restates that language is not a mere tool for communication; it plays many important functions in social life. The language policy in Nigeria should take into account of ethnic minorities and the interests of most ethnic groups so as to promote national harmony and economic development.
