Silk Road in Modern Times: Significant Node of the Historical Leap from the Silk Road to the Belt and Road Initiatives

当下的丝绸之路研究集中在两个时期,一是古代,二是当代。人们津津乐道古丝绸之路的辉煌,追逐并憧憬"一带一路"国家战略的梦想,而对近代(晚清民国)的中西交通,古丝绸之路在近代的变迁,关注较少,甚至很少有人提及近代"丝绸之路"。然而,从古代到当代,承先启后的应是近代,"丝绸之路"的命名、探险、考察、复原、研究,中外交通道路的现代化建设等,都是近代开始的,不能忽略。

The current research on the Silk Road mainly focuses on two periods： one is the ancient time and the other is the present age. People always take delight in talking about the glory of the ancient Silk Road, chase and look forward to the national strategy of the Belt and Road, but few concerns the traffic from China to the West countries and the change of the ancient Silk Road in modern times （ From late Qing dynasty to the Republic of China）. There is even no mention on the Silk Road in modern times. However, the naming, exploration, investigation, restoration, research of the Silk Road and the modernization construction of traffic roads in China and foreign countries all take place in the modern times. So, the modern time is the connection of the ancient time and the present age and cannot be ignored.
