Tumor invasion and metastasis is the main cause of death among cancer patients. Although the changes of tumor cells themselves can promote this process, the microenvironments of tumor also play a more important role. A tumor microenvironment is a complex system composed of tumor cells and many stromal cells, including immune and inflammatory cells, vascular endothelial cells, fibroblasts, etc., all of which interact with each other to promote the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells in cancer occurrence and development. However, this multimoleeular and muhicellnlar interaction is difficult to observe with traditional labelling methods, and so is the comprehensive performance of cancer invasion process. Quantum dots-based imaging, an important imaging technique with superior optical properties, can achieve real-time, quantitative, multi-component and long-time imaging of mi ents tn situ, thus having extensive application outlook in oncology. This paper mainly reviews the recent progress in researches of tumor micro- environment, and summarizes the application of quantum dots-based multimolecular imaging technology in the study of the microenvi- ronments of hepatoceIlular carcinoma, gastric cancer, cervical carcinoma and breast cancer.
