严复终其一生具有浓厚的中国传统文化情怀。他自幼深受传统文化的浸润,私塾老师黄少岩对其早年影响至深;执教北洋水师学堂的20年间,严复系统研治中国古典文化,为其日后娴熟地运用中国古典文字打下了坚实基础;甲午战后,严复致力于托译言志,其译著中的传统文化元素俯拾皆是,从形式到内容,从翻译的名词到他的进化论、自由主义以及民主观念等,无不建立在他对中国传统文化的深厚感情上。

Chinese traditional culture feelings were fully manifested in Yan Fu＇s lifetime. Growing up in traditional culture, Yan Fu was profoundly influenced by his teacher Huang Shaoyan in his early days. Yan Fu made a systematic study of Chinese classical culture during his two decades of teaching in Beiyang Marine College, which laid a solid foundation for his proficient application of Chi- nese classical culture in days to come. After Sino-Japanese War, Yan Fu devoted himself in translation as a medium of expressing his emotion and ambition. Traditional cultural elements could be captured everywhere in his translations. From the content to the form, Yan Fu professed a keen affection for Chi- nese traditional culture, which was not only displayed between the lines, but also inherent in his ideas of evolutionism, liberalism and democracy, etc.
