A study of the flag of the King of Yalu of the Miao in Mashan

亚鲁王族旗是亚鲁苗人死后由亡者的内亲(有直接血缘关系的亲属)制作的覆盖于死者脸部、胸前并陪葬的一块绣上图案的土布。它是亚鲁苗人灵魂皈依祖先的富足国度里认祖归宗并被"祖奶奶"接纳的标识性神物,是亚鲁子孙身份的象征。族旗形式多样,图案主要由刺绣和剪纸构成,纹样寓意源于《亚鲁王》史诗,有着丰富的文化内涵及美学价值。其艺术表现形式及内涵与东部、中部方言区苗族完全不同,是这支苗人在其民族历史特有文化形态下的表达和外化。

The flag of the King of Yalu is a home-made cloth with embroidery patterns used to cover over the face and chest of the dead Yalu Miao, which is made by the family members of the dead. The flag is a holy marker, the identity symbol of Yalu descendants, through which the soul of a Yalu Miao can come back to the rich country of his/her ancestors and can be admitted by the ＂grandmother＂. The flag of the King of Yalu has various forms, whose patterns are made mainly of embroidery and pa- per-cuts, and the meaning of the patterns is from Epic of the King of Yalu, which contains rich cultural connotations and aesthet- ic value. Its artistic expression and connotations are completely different from those in other Miao dialect areas like the east and the middle regions, which is Yalu Miao＇s unique cultural manifestation and externalization of their ethnic history.
