Published in 2010, Sunset Park concerns the theme that figures largely in Paul Auster's previ- ous writings, i.e. contemporary American urban life. Yet it shifts away from the typical Auster style. In the novel, Auster lays bare urban problems in New York against the backdrop of the political and economic crisis. The solutions suggested by Auster are artistic practices and a return to corporeal sensibility, which, he be- lieves can help individuals understand themselves and the meaning of life. Auster's representation of New York in Sunset Park indicates he is aware that in the post era of "9/11" and economic downturn, the sense of be- longing and individuals' strong ties with space are psychological needs of New York citizens. He intends to ap- pease the pressure brought about by unemployment, homelessness, and security threats through a soft account of New York, thus strengthening New York residents' identification with the city.
