The term "The Eight Beauties along the Qinhuai River" refers to eight brothel women along the Qinhuai River in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty: Bian Yujing, Gu Meisheng, Kou Baimen, Ma Xianglan, Liu Rushi, Li Xiangjun, Dong Xiaowan, and Chen Yuanyuan. The impacts they had on the history of drama and their contribution as "the second sex" to Chinese drama can be interpreted from the analyses of actors and actresses, playwrights, and the characters in the plays. The studies of these eight beauties from the perspectives of drama and gender criticism will have considerable influence on the writing of both Chinese literary history and Chinese women's cultural history.
