人类的边疆观念,是对自身所处环境反映的阶段性产物,这是人类在进化的过程中依托于生物性需求所达到的一种社会理性,即人类社会进化到国家组织阶段时关于疆域以及疆域边界的认知,其底蕴在于无论何种形态的国家,必须在资源的配置活动中求得生存乃至发展,以避免被灭亡的命运。由于实践的需求,国家疆域和边疆研究逐渐形成一种理论体系,这个理论体系的发展支撑着边疆学最终将成为一门学科。边疆学研究的是人类社会国家政治实体在时空统一下国家边疆的形态与活动,以及由这些形态活动演化出来的实体边疆与虚拟边疆运行的规律。

People＇ s concept of frontier is a stage product of their reaction to their environment. It is a social rationality gained by human beings in the evolution process based on their biological demand, that is, human beings＇ cognition of territory and frontier when human society evolved into a stage of state organization. It implies that whatever a form of a state, it must survive and develop in the allocation of resources in order to avoid being destroyed. Due to practical needs, the studies on state territory and frontier have gradually formed a theoretical system, which helps frontier studies develop into a science. So frontier science is a study of the forms and activities of state territory of the state political entity of human societies under the unity of time and space and the operation rules of both physical and virtual frontiers evolved from the forms and activities.
