In November 2012 to January 2013, Archaeology Department, School of History, Zhengzhou Uni- versity and other institutions conducted rescue excavation to the Wenkangou Locus East, uncovering areas 4000 sq m in total, from which the remains of the Longshan Culture, Western Zhou, Eastern Zhou, Han Dynasty, Six-Dynasties Period, Tang Dynasty and so on have been found, and artifacts made of pottery, porcelain, bronze, jade, iron, stone and so on were unearthed. The assemblage of the artifacts of the Longshan Culture found in this excavation is roughly the same as that of the Wangwan Phase Ⅲ Culture found at Xiawanggang Site in Xichuan, etc. The pottery wares of the Western Zhou Dynasty found at this locus have similar features with that found at Qijia jade jue-earring workshop site in Shaanxi and the Tianma-Qucun residential remains in Shanxi, both of which were dated as the early stage of the mid Western Zhou Dynasty. These remains roughly reflected the cultural features in this area before the formation of the Chu Culture and provided important data for the studies on the formation of the early Chu Culture in the valleys of the Danjiang and Xishui Rivers.
