From the perspective of "the double" in Freud' s "The Uncanny", this paper studies the novel Steps of the Sun by American woman writer Emily Hahn and her transcultural experiences by focusing on the two women characters--modem American woman Dorothy Pilgrim and traditional Chinese woman Chen Meifeng, to discuss how Hahn projects the self' s double into the other in her transeuhural writing and realizes her feminine identification through negotiation with the other. The differences between the self and other reflect the challenges that American new women flappers posed to American traditional gender norm. Different from other flappers who had to compromise and return to home, Emily Hahn makes friends with Chinese intellectuals, experiences the differentiated modernity of Shanghai in republican period, and creates lots of transcuhural narratives, which contributes to her success as a writer, a promoter of Sino-American cultural interchange, and her modem female subjectivity.
