In The Reader, Hanna Schmitz, Michael Berg and the daughter are all picaresques. They were lost in a trial of Nazi but unconscious. At last, they are called by civilization, and realized their sin by reading. From a perspective of perpetrator, Bern- hard Schlink's aim was not criticism but introspection. He would like to find the root of evil, and think about how to face the future of our nation.
