Under the pressure of orientalism and cultural hegemony, orient is produced as Other with its features of poverty, powerlessness, underdevelopment and mystery to contrast prosperity, power, development and advancement, which are regarded as western features. Contemporary Chinese American writers, Maxine Hong Kingston, David Henry Hwang, Frank Chin and Shawn Wong for instances speculate on the construction of Chinese American male images complex, dynamic and involving or gallant, charm- ing and rebellious. American main stream culture and contemporary Chinese American writers perform Chinese American male images for their different political purposes. The latter may not share the same perception of what Chinese American masculinity is, whereas their works no doubt deny political oppression, racial discrimination and cultural hegemony without prior consultation.
