Jin Ping Mei reflects the social reality of late Ming dynasty and the culture of the Canal basin in that period including silk culture. With the novel Jin Ping Mei as the original version, this paper discusses the pros- perity of the silk culture in the Canal basin in Ming dynasty mainly in three aspects. The first is that in Ming dynasty, there was a great variety of fabrics, especially the silk which was of bright colors and rich patterns. The second is the superb silk weaving technology. Gold weaving, brocading and makeup flower skills reached the acme of perfection. The third is that the silk trade was prosperous. In Ming dynasty, the silk weaving industry was highly developed in Jiangnan region, which was not only the big market of silk trade itself but there were silk markets throughout the country especially along the banks of the Canal with highly convenient transportation.
