Utilitarian and Artistic——On the Description about the City in Mao Dun's Midnight and Mu Shiying's Advance of China

茅盾的长篇小说《子夜》与穆时英的长篇小说《中国行进》都是以一九三〇年代的上海为背景,写了民族资本家与国际资本主义的斗争和农村的破产与农民暴动,同时也写了当时的南北大战。但由于两人视角的不同与观念的差别,呈现出来的景观是完全不一样的。如果说,茅盾对上海的社会形态是科学家、哲学家的分析,《子夜》体现出的社会价值,有着里程碑的意义;那么,《中国行进》则是"把现代派技巧作为一种现代历史主义形式而加以使用",体现出不同凡响的文学价值。
