现代社会的价值混乱与精神空虚使T.S.艾略特希望能够重新联结传统与现在,并从中寻求意义与秩序,《荒原》即在这种情况下创作出来。诗人把自己的思想、感情、经验与历史神话、文学典故相融合,通过一定的形式,使其成为了一个复杂的类似于魔方的结构整体。这一新的整体由于众多元素的相互作用,展现了一个极其开放,并可以不断阐释的世界,从中我们看到了诗人赋予《荒原》的深刻内涵。

Because of the mass and vanity of modern society T.S.Eliot hoped to combine the present with the past, so that the order and meanings can be found from this combination. The Waste Land was written in this situation.The poet mixed his thought, emotion . and experience into the history, legends and literary allusions by a certain way, and made the poem a complex whole which is like a magic cube. This whole is an open and profound world which can be successively interpreted.
