Seeking the Shimen Fortress

石门障最早见于《汉书·地理志》的记载。西汉五原郡下辖16县,其中稒阳县同时为五原郡东都都尉治所,《汉书·地理志》“五原郡”条“稒阳”下注曰：“北出石门障得光禄城,又西北得支就城,又西北得头曼城,又西北得虖河城,又西得宿虏城。”北魏郦道元在《水经注》中亦提到石门障,在《水经》的“又东过临沃县南”一句下注曰：“河水又东流,石门水南注之,水出石门山。

According to the records of Qingshigao, some present scholars hold that Shimen fortress, which located in Guyang county of Wuyuan prefecture during Western Han dynasty was related to the fortress sites that near the Kundulun ditch of Baotou city. Based on the field investigation and combined with the relative records of Hanshu Dilizhi and Shuijingzhu, this paper restudies that Wudang ditch is recorded as Shimenshui in Shuijingzhu, and finds the Shimen ditch at Wudang ditch and the Shimen that excavated during Han dynasty, then further states that during western Han dynasty there was a Shimen stronghold which relies on the Wudang ditch, centered by Shimen fortress and consisted of series of forts and bastions.
