Xipi is one of the two chief types Pi Huang tones of our national opera. A lot of scholars think that Xipi de- rives from Shanxi opera. In this paper, based upon an analysis and study of literature and material, we adopt national musicology method, and do some field investigation, and find that Xipi does not derive from Shanxi opera, but derive from western Gansu opera. Here westem Gansu does not refer to western Shanxi but refers to Long Nan region in Gansu province. Folk opera like shadow tone in Long Nan popular in the region is closely related to Xipi.
