With four centuries of academic tradition, contemporary Arabic studies in the UK have developed a broad and profound research system. Its striking features include being precise and penetrating, emphasis on the empirical research and adoption of interdisciplinary methodology. Two dominant trends in Middle - East and Arabic studies in the UK can be identified. One is to illuminate the representation of Arabic culture in the Western perspective ; the other is to explore the Arabic - Islamic cultural experience itself from a dual perspective, combining the views of Western and Arabic scholars. British scholars in this field, with their sharp consciousness of reality, their shifting research focus, and their approach towards popular culture, have forged a new path that helps us to construct an interactive discourse in the field of Chinese Arabic studies.
