The China Review： Or,Notes and Queries on the Far East was a leading journal for Sino-western communication history in late 19th century. It has published numerous articles about Chinese law and custom,including selected translations of the Ta-Ching Lü-Li,the His Yuan Lu and the Xing’anhuilan,special reports about ancient Chinese legal tradition and Qing Collected Statutes,comments on the implement of Chinese law,introductory articles about Chinese bureaucratic system,criminal law,prison,marriage,inheritance,adoption and commercial law. Vis-à-vis The Chinese Repository,The China Review has changed significantly its range,focus and methodology when report about Chinese law. The China Review has important value for many studies in comparative legal history,e. g. Western translations of Chinese legal classics,the transition of 19th century Westerner’s attitude about Chinese legal world.
