As an well-known female novelist in the 19th century, Elizabeth Gaskell is famous for her novels about ＂social problems＂, ＂modern industry＂ and ＂country life＂. Cranford, one of Gaskell＇s important works, no longer merely concentrates on the country life, the Utopia or feminism. It attempts to focus on an imaginary community of single older women, to search for the harmonious relationship between man and woman, between different social classes, and between traditions and the modernism in the Victorian age. Gaskell＇s awareness to seek social harmony is deeply rooted in her sole divinity.
