《书林清话》是研究中国古代典籍的开山之作 ,书中记载了一些著名刻书家、藏书家的逸闻趣事 ,表彰了一批名不见经传的书贾、写工、装订工及钞书女子等 ,为后人研究古代校书、刻书、抄书、卖书、藏书及书坊、书肆情况提供了丰富的资料与线索。叶德辉在征引史料时 ,多附案语 ,纠误补缺 ,有资于文史研究者。

shulinqinghua ' is the first important work on Chinese ancient books and records, in which some anecdotes are recorded about some famous book-engravers and book-collectors, and where some unknown booksellers, transcribers, binders and women copiers are also cited. This book provides abiding materials and clues for later generations to study the ancient book collating, engraving, transcribing, selling, collecting, thus supplying bookshops and bookstores with printing works. While citing the historical materials, Ye De-hui, a modern Chinese scholar frequently added some notes while citing historical materials to correct the mistakes and eliminate the lack. Therefore, it is of great use to the researchers of culture and history.
