近代苏州商团所处的一个社会环境是一个新式民间团体遍布的社会。苏州是近代中国开埠较早地区之一,也是近代化因素出现较早的地区之一。苏州商团作为苏州绅商在清季民初社会动荡背景下维持自身利益的产物,从诞生之初,即带有明显的商人色彩。在与其他社会团体主要是民间团体的互动中,苏州商团与其他社团一起构成了在野的市政网络体系。在社团网络中,苏州商团一方面履行自身的责任,另一方面也抓住机会不断促进自身的生存与发展。

Modern Suzhou Commercial Corps exist in a society where newly established civil society prevails. Suzhou is not only one of the regions which open to foreign traders at an early period but also one region which enters the stage of modernization earlier than others.
