Assessing Translation Practices and Chen Duxiu's Modernist Conception of Literature

陈独秀由翻译实践展开的文化反思超越了器物层面,抵达了思想与行为模式的核心,为文学革新的发生创造了必要前提。它既是新文化运动被赋予合法性的重要理论来源,又是反思中国现代化历史的一个新起点。陈独秀基于翻译而形成的中国文化价值判断,实际上决定了此后有关文学的现代观念和文学革命如何开展的基本主张,也深刻左右了新文学发展的整体景观。

Chen Duxiu's approach to translation inspired the reconsideration of Chinese culture,not only by providing new materials,but also in a way touching the very essence of how people thought and acted.It thus provided significant theoretical support for the New Culture Movement,offered a fresh starting point of reflecting on the history of China's modernization and acted as a prerequisite for the literary innovation of the early 20thcentury.Through the translation practices Chen Duxiu got his judgement of Chinese cultural values that'the West is superior and China inferior.'It was this notion that played a prominent role in defining the subsequent perceptions on literature modernism and the revolution in literature,and profoundly influenced the general development of new literature.
