Against the backdrop of downtown spectacles and gentrification in contemporary Shanghai, some of the old Workers' Villages have turned into low-income population's settlements.Taking Tianlin Workers' Village as an example, behind the gate, local residents appropriate the common space informally and tentatively, causing impacts on the physical environment and the relationship between communities. This research divides the common space into three levels through diagrams and texts, and elaborates the mechanisms of living-space overflowing and social mutualism.
