Principles for Translating Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit

黑格尔《精神现象学》(句读本)的翻译理念是:通过对西方文化背景的全面了解和熟悉,对黑格尔高度抽象思辨的文句加以疏通,将中国读者带入一种高强度的逻辑思维和体系化思维的训练,提高中国人解读西方思想的隐微之处的能力。比较和分析国内现有的三个中译本的长处和短处,可以提出译者做哲学翻译的原则:第一,严格的术语意识,追求译名的统一性;第二,保持句子的完整性和连贯性,在原作者没有打句号的地方,决不妄加句号;第三,不但要追溯一个词的来龙去脉,推敲每个词的最严谨的表达,尽可能直译,同时也要挖掘该词在西方文化中很可能不同于中国文化的背景和语境,以免貌合神离。

When translating Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit,the translator kept the following idea in mind:on the basis of comprehensive grasp of Western culture,translating Hegel's highly abstract and speculative texts into readily understandable modern Chinese language,in order to give Chinese readers a high-intensity training in logical and systematic thinking and improve their ability to understand the nuances of Western thought.After analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the three existing Chinese versions of the book,we applied three principles in translating philosophical works.First,have a high terminological awareness to keep the consistency of terms.Second,keep the coherence of sentences,where full stops in the target language are in complete accord with the source texts.Third,find the most accurate possible expression of each term by tracing its origin and translate it literally as possible as it can be;at the same time,take Western culture into full consideration in translating the term,to highlight its likely heterogenous meaning,so as to avoid its misunderstanding in Chinese context.
