摘要 The four cardinal signs of inflammation: rubor (redness), tumor (swelling), calor (heat) and dolor (pain) were first documented by the Roman encyclopedist Aulus Cornelius Celsus in the first century AD. The investigation of inflammatory reaction was integrated within the context of protective phagocytosis against noxious agents innate by Elie Metchnikoff, father of and cellular immunity, who elaborated on the function of phagocytes in his lectures on Comparative Pathology of Inflammation.
