The Inside Outweighs the Surface: A Trait of Indonesian Java Culture from the Image of Semar

本文以印尼爪哇哇扬最有代表性的形象——瑟玛尔为例,从爪哇美学、理想、伦理、哲学等层面分析爪哇文化。爪哇人认为哇扬就是爪哇哲学;爪哇人追求内外一致的高雅,内心高雅是指拥有忠诚践行义务职责的敏感内心;爪哇人重视内在,认为每个个体都由好坏、善恶组成,人类最大的斗争是个体道德伦理的自我斗争,爪哇文化强调实质重于表象。

This article analyzed Semar,the most significant image of the presentation of Java Wayang,from levels ranging from aesthetics,ideals,ethics and philosophies of Java.Wayang is considered as a fully symbolic representation of Java philosophy.The Javanese seeks the consistency of halus from the inside to the surface,which halus inside means a sensitive mind fulfilling responsibility loyally.The Javanese believe that the inside outweighs the surface.They also believe that individuals are the combination of the goodness and the badness,which leads to the ethics of'the major struggle of a human being is the inner struggle of himself'.Thus,a conclusion was drawn—The inside is attached more importance to the surface in Indonesian Java culture.
