牟平是中国道教全真派的发祥地。早在汉代,道教文化就已经融入到牟平人的日常生活中,位于城区东南的昆嵛山,成为道教女仙麻姑的修炼飞升之地。1167年夏,道教全真派创始人王重阳来到宁海州（牟平）传经布道,当时牟平的主流知识阶层和普通百姓很快接纳了这位远道而来的传道者,王重阳收马钰、丘处机等“七真人”为徒,其中的五位为牟平籍。1168年春,
