摘要
英国传教士傅兰雅受英国圣公会之命,来华从事教育事业。他在近代中国最早的新式外国语学堂——京师同文馆从事英文教育,这是他在华教育活动的重要组成部分。虽然在馆时间仅有两年,但从同文馆毕业生的就业趋向以及当时社会的反应来看,傅兰雅对同文馆的发展作出了一定的贡献。文章利用原始文献对傅兰雅入职同文馆、外语教育及其贡献等相关情况作一简单梳理。
John Fryer, a famous British missionary, was assigned by the Church of England to carry out educational activities in Late-Qing China. He was engaged to teach students English in Peking T' ung Wen Kuan, the earliest new foreign language school. And this was part of his educational activities. Though he had been in the school for only two years, John Fryer made great contributions to the development of Peking T' ung Wen Kuan from employment trends of the school graduates and the then reaction from the society. The essay, by applying the original historical documents, will simply organize such issues as John Fryer' s finding employment in the school, his educational activities and contributions to the school.
