Ellen Gilchrist, in her debut novel The Annunciation, rewrites William Faulkner＇ s female protag- onists by integrating Southern chivalry with ladyhood for a creation of female cavalier in pursuit of adven- ture and freedom. Her novel, based on a strong intertextuality with Faulkner＇ s The Sound and the Fury and The Wild Palms, portraits a new South in terms of historical consciousness, biblical allusions and a fe- male perspective. Her protagonist Amanda McCamey, while inheriting the essence of Southern culture, protests against traditional fetters and thus cultivates herself as a character of great importance in postwar Southern women literature.
