Stance in Key Semantic Domains: A Corpus-driven Critical Discourse Analysis of Media Coverage of Xi Jinping's Visits to the UK and the US

文章运用语料库驱动方法,从批评话语分析角度出发,通过比较英国新闻媒体对中国国家主席习近平访英报道、美国新闻媒体对习近平访美报道的主题语义域,分析立场异同,揭示其中的权力关系与意识形态。研究显示,英美媒体都为中国贴上了"独裁"、"人权危机"和"中国威胁论"的模式化标签;英媒对中英经贸合作前景相对乐观,但担心中英伙伴关系影响英美传统盟友关系;美媒对中美经贸合作前景不甚乐观,并刻意挑选网络安全和南海争端两大议题进行高频报道以对中国进行批判。

This article compares the stance of UK media in reporting Chinese President Xi Jinping＇ s visit to the UK and that of US media in covering Xi＇ s visit to the US, thus yielding insights into the underlying power relations and ideologies. Guided by the theories of corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis, it studies the key semantic domains generated with Wmatrix, a corpus linguistic tool, and examines the similarities and differences in media construction of the two visits. It is concluded that both UK and US media stereo- type China as a ＂dictatorship＂ racked by ＂human rights crisis＂ posing ＂China threat＂. UK media is quite optimistic about UK-China economic cooperation but concerned that it might undermine UK-US relations. With a fairly negative view on US-China economic cooperation, US media has deliberately increased coverage of cyber security and South China Sea disputes to criticize China.
