Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Hongkong Longman English Textbook

科学技术进步带动了教科书的深刻的变化。教科书已不仅仅以文本出现,而是在图像设计、内容选择、模块安排以及配套学习等方面都突出了多模态的特点,使教材以图片、影像、音频等方式来进行信息的传递。在信息多媒介化的今天,对教材的分析不应局限在语篇单模态分析上,而应在教材的多模态特征方面进行研究。以多模态话语分析理论和视觉语法理论为指导,对香港80%学校采用的朗文出版社出版的英语教材<Longman Welcome to English>进行分析,探讨外语教科书中语言和图像符号共同构建意义的方式和产生的效果,探索多模态话语分析在教科书中的运用。

Textbook is an important carrier of knowledge and culture, so the textbook discourse analysis has been concerned and researched from a variety of perspectives. During the present postmodern period, textbook is not only expressed in text mode, but also expressed in multimodal way with pictures design, content selection, mode arrangement, etc. And those play significant role in information delivery. So it is necessary to study the multimodality of textbook discourse rather than its mono-rnodal feature. Therefore, the aim for the present research is to adopt the approach of multimodal discourse analysis as well as visual grammar to explore multimodality in textbook discourse and propose a richer account of evaluations by integrating visual and verbal modes in meaning-making mechanism. The data of this thesis is selected from textbook of Hong Kong Longman welcome to English.
