In his writing of essays, Zhu Shoutong tells the truth, and the individualized truth, and, for that reason, the word ‘vulgar＇ in the title of his collection of essays does not simply mean that＇ the ordinary people‘are far removed from‘the temple＇ ; it is more an irony against the mainland elite society that is gold on the outside but rotten cotton on the inside, a subversion of the values. He may follow the‘vulgar＇ but he never mixes with the sewer as Zhu＇ s chosen path in life can be more accurately described as‘following the clean flow＇.
