本文以上海为例,对1843年11月上海开埠后来沪造访的军舰及驻守上海的外国军队的音乐活动予以钩沉。旨在透过西文报刊、节目单、相片等一手文献,详析来沪各国军乐队的组成、表演的形式、所演奏的曲目及其所产生影响。此外,探构西式军乐队在晚清政局下寓华外侨文化生活中的作用也是本文的目的之一。

With first-hand material such as Western language journals,concert programs and photos,the writer aims to describe the composition of Shanghai foreign military bands,the forms and repertoires of performance and the influences thy produced. In addition,the function of the Shanghai Westerners' bands in the late Qin dynasty s also explored.
