The Cultural Character of Professors in South-west Associated University and the University Spirit

在严酷的战争环境和贫乏的物质条件下,西南联大之所以能取得令人瞩目的教育和学术成就,教授群体的理想信念和价值追求及其产生的精神力量,起到了不容忽视的作用。联大教授群体文化性格的内涵主要包括精英意识、忧患意识、自由求真精神、独立批判精神。文化传统、现实环境、学术共同体、个体志趣和个性等不同层面的因素共同作用于联大教授群体,影响其文化性格的生成和展现。联大精神与教授群体文化性格的内在关联主要在二者的内涵、特性、功能上得以体现。

In the harsh wartime and poor material conditions, South-west Associated University was able to achieve remarkable educational and academic achievements, the ideals, beliefs and values of the professors played a significant role. The cultural character connotation of the professors included the elite consciousness, the crisis awareness, the spirit of freedom and seeking-truth and the spirit of independence and criticism. Cultural tradition, social environment, academic community, professors＇ individual inclination and personality had impacts on their cultural character. The internal connection between the spirit of South-west Associated University and the cultural character of the professors was mainly embodied in their connotation, characteristics and functions.
