China has a long tradition of love poems, whose first culmination arrived at the Pre - Qin period. Most love poems collected in Book of Poetry, follow the principle of avoiding licentiousness and sentimentality, reflecting an educated nobleness. Ye You Si Jun, or literally In the Wild There is a Dead Antelope, is one of the most con-troversial among love poems in Book of Poetry for its daring depiction of sexual intercourse and contemptuous to-wards social conventions, and has aroused a comprehensive and enduring debate over its theme and the rationale of inclusion in Book of Poetry. First, this paper categorizes and compares the existing opinions, and then turnes to its key words and background, which led to the conclusion that the poem reflected the practice of the uwilderness in-tercourse^ convention in the Western Zhou dynasty when it was not yet annihilated by dominating ethics of Zhou, and demonstrated the aesthetic taste of “ start with love and end with virtue” , This paper further shows that the po-em 5 s theme is wilderness intercourse of a couple, and discusses the rationale that this poem is included in South of Shao, which constitutes a revered chapter of Book of Poetry, that is, the Two South, together with South of Zhou.
