E. L. Doctorow's The March highlights the ethical significance of individual witness to history by foregrounding Emily Thompson's Civil War experience. Emily's witness to war reveals that individual witness to history undergoes an ever-changing and self-revising process and therefore becomes an ongoing narrative of individual identity. Emily's transformation from a war victim to a historical witness and a voluntary world-mender suggests that the individual can realize and take his/her responsibility to society through his/her witness to history.
