摘要
想象一个理想的共同体是任何时代优秀作家的伟大传统。19世纪英国文坛的共同体冲动针对的是机械文明及其滋生的无序的文化生态。这一时期重要作家查尔斯·金斯利的小说《向西去啊!》探索的便是共同体秩序的重建。小说的切入点是婚姻,平民英雄艾姆亚斯"英雄救美"的三次出海活动昭示着秩序的瓦解和重建,其中女主人公罗斯的婚恋悲剧勾勒出工业文明扩张后摇摇欲坠的传统婚姻秩序,女主人公阿萨卡诺拉成为英国淑女的重生预示着共同体秩序的重建。小说中的船既是英格兰民族的象征又是有机共同体的缩影,航行中激活的伦理道德、心智培育、民族良心、审美趣味、民族特性等等,都是维系理想共同体的纽带。
To imagine an ideal community is a great tradition among master writers in every epoch. The community impulse in the 19th century British literary field is directed at mechanical civilization and the state of anarchy in cultural ecology that stem- med from it. The novel Westward Ho ! by Charles Kingsley within that time frame explores the restoration of order in communi- ty. The hero Amyas＇ three sailings westward implies the collapse and the revival of order in marriage, where the heroine Rose＇ s love tragedy shows the crumbling traditional marital order and Ayacanora＇ s becoming of an English lady foretells the reestablishment of community order. The ship in the novel represents both the Englishness and an organic community and vari- ous aspects activated by sailing such as the morality, the cultivation of mind, the national conscience, the aesthetic taste and the English national character are the bonding fibers in an ideal community.
