A Study on Pronunciation of “Mojie” and “Mohe”

"靺鞨"一词在史籍中有若干种写法,通过对其内在关系的考察,以及通过音韵学拟音的手段,可以确定靺羯、靺鞨在隋唐中古时期的读音。以"靺鞨"的多种写法为切入点,探究其中演变的经纬,并通过音韵学拟音的手段考察"靺羯""靺鞨"两词在隋唐中古时期的读音。通过比对可以发现,"靺羯"的"望发切、居谒切"读音与"勿吉"的"文弗切、居质切"读音是十分接近的,甚至可以说"靺羯"就是"勿吉"的同音异写。这一结论不仅为进一步探讨勿吉与靺鞨的继承性关系提供了坚实的基础,而且也为究明渤海国的族源增添了新的线索和思路。

There are several ways in historical records to write the name of the ancient tribe ＂Mohe＂. This thesis intends to study the diverse ways of writing to work out the evolution of the word ＂Mo- he＂. Also, its pronunciation in Sui-Tang dynasty can be clarified with the method of phonologic reconstruction. The pronunciations of tribe names testify the inheritance relationship of the two tribes.
