This article first describes the historical background for the theory of cultural memory developed by Jan Assmann and analyses the relationship between Halbwachs＇ theory of collective memory and Assmann＇ s theory of cultural memory. The author emphasizes the fact that the theory of cultural memory has expanded and promoted the research in the field of memory, by pointing out how the theory of cultural memory helps to explain and solve controversial issues and distinguish between historiography and collective memory. With the example of German scholars＇ discussion of the Second World War and the Holocaust, the author tries to show the actuality of the theory of cuhural memory.
