India's strategic culture originates in two sets of correlative concepts and ideas. One is a group of religious beliefs based mainly on both Vedic culture and Hinduism, the other political philosophy born of secular activities and geo-political evolution. The former endows India's strategic culture with spirituality and mysticism, and the latter with pragmatism and instrumental significance. Therefore beliefs at both philosophical and instrumental levels overlay, and consequently shape a multifaceted and tridimensional structure of India's strategic culture. Concerning its preference, neither defensiveness or offensiveness can depict it exactly. India's strategic culture is, in effect, a hybrid of both defensiveness and offensiveness. There is a strong correla- tion between India's strategic culture and India's strategy decision making and security behavior. The former limits and guides the latter by supplying social-cultural field.
