An Exchange:Of the Difference between Translating Titles and Re-entitling Translated Works

跨文化交流有多种方法或形式,翻译只是其中的一种。为实现跨文化交流的目的,译者在完成翻译任务时可适当借用其他方法或形式,但从逻辑概念上讲,不可把其他方法或形式(包括为翻译作品重新命名)混同于翻译。翻译的本质属性是"言易",故翻译活动是将一种语言的文本转换为另一种语言文本的活动,而译文(包括作品名译名)则是这种转换活动的结果。较之作品名翻译,为某些翻译作品重新命名往往更适合译文读者,从而使跨文化交流更富成效。

For cross-cultural communication or for people from different cultures communicating with each other,there are various ways or forms,one of which is translation.In order to achieve his purpose of cross-cultural communication,a translator may borrow other ways or forms when he is carrying out his task,but he may not,logically and conceptually,confuse these ways or forms,including re-entitling translated works,with translation.The essential attribute of translation is language exchange and therefore translation means a linguistic-textual operation in which a text in source language is reproduced into target language,and the target text,including the translated title of a work,is the result of this operation.Compared with translating the title of an original work,re-entitling a translated work sometimes can adapt the work better to target readers and consequently enhance the effectiveness of cross-cultural transmission and communication.
