Thomas hardy is the social environment and one of the most famous trans-century realistic writers in Britain. In his works, personal character are well described,and many tragedy characters he created have their own unique charms. Especially in Tess of the d＇Urbervilles, of which the leading character Tess presented the greatest tragic fate, In this book, Hardy showed his deep sympathy and care to the lower people especially women at rural environment in Britain. The leading character Tess is a kind and beautiful girl with perseverance and self-sacrifice spirit, but deep inside her personality is weak and cowardly. She suffered from being raped, abandoned, finally helplessly under the pain of hanging, from which we can see her fate is doomed to be tragic. Tess was a poor rural women, and her resistance to the society is weak and useless, so her tragic fate seemed to be unavoidable. It is also because of the dark society that caused the tragedy of her fate. this paper tries to explore and analyze the causes of tess＇s tragic fate from the perspectives of personal character and society environment.
