美国著名图书馆学家梅特卡夫的大学图书馆建筑规划思想表现在:(1)图书的存储空间、读者的空间、员工空间是大学图书馆的主要空间需求,各类型的空间配置具有一定的计算方法;(2)可以以有效利用图书馆现有空间、对馆藏进行分散化存储、建设附楼或附属建筑3种方式替代大学新馆的建设;(3)大学新馆规划前需要考虑其建设费用;(4)大学图书馆建筑选址需要考虑该地点的面积、与相邻建筑或整个校园人口布局及交通流的关系等主要因素;(5)大学图书馆阅览室座位的布局应根据不同群体用户的需求及其利用图书馆的方式来确定,同时书架的布局应考虑其存储容量及标准书架区域所需的面积;(6)大学图书馆灯光照明应从质量、功能、审美、强度、成本5个方面设计与规划。

The famous American librarian Keyes DeWitt Metcalf＇s thoughts of university library architectual planning are as follows： ①Space needs for books, for readers, and for staff are the chief categories of university library space requirements. Each kind of space configuration has a certain calculation method. ② Three alternatives to a new university library building are recommended, including making better use of the existing space, housing books separately or introducing other forms of decentralization, planning annexes and additions .③ Costs should be calculated when planning a new university library building. ④ Some major factors should be taken into account in evaluating a university library site, including its size, its relation to neighboring buildings and to the whole population distribution and traffic flow of the institution and soon. ⑤ university library must provide seating accommodations according to the needs of different user groups and their differences in using the libraries. In laying out a stack, the volume capacity and square feet required for the average single-faced standard size sec--tion should be kept in mind. ⑥ Five pertinent university library lighting problems such as quality, function, aesthetics, intensity, and costs should be considered.
