Lexicalization and Grammaticalization of Chinese Words Zhaoxi and Rixi

先秦时期,"朝""夕"常用作名词,二者并列连用为名词短语,后发生词汇化,成为一个并列复合词,表"时日,光阴"义,也可指"非常短的时间"。唐代时,"朝夕"虚化为副词,表示"时时,常常",其副词用法的产生是语法化的结果。而"日夕"也经历了类似的词汇化和语法化过程。

Chinese word Zhao and Xi were often used as a noun in the pre - Qin Dynasty, and they could be used as a nominal phrase. Then it became a paratactic compound noun and means a short time. Zhaoxi has became an adverb in the Tang Dynasty. The usage of its adverb meaning was the result of its grammaticalizaion. While the words Rixi has experienced a similar process of lexicalization and grammaticalization.
