The modernization of cities in the 20th century led to the globalization and internationalization of architecture that uprooted local urban and architectural practice. Very often we see in the modernization process the underline concept that what is old is bad and the new is good. This paper analyses three controversial but successtid case studies of rehabilitation approaches of public squares in the four century's old Historic Center of Macao, which was classified in 2005 by UNESCO as World Heritage.
