The American teen film as a genre has been widely regarded as the "invention" of the 1950s, namely, the Hollywood response to the decline of film market. Moving beyond such conventional understandings from a linear perspective, this essay traces the changing modes of American teen films situated within longer historiographical and more complex contexts as well as industrial and aesthetical landscapes. As an effort in opening up possibilities for reflecting on the contemporary Chinese production of "teen films," this essay foregrounds a critical lens shaped by three key aspects: teen film as (alternative) history, social problem (Intergenerational Economics), and spectatorship.
