Ideas and discourse are the core concepts of discrusive institutionalism. The substantive content of ideas and the interactive processes of discourse not only present the dynamics of institutional change, but also overcome obstacles that the three more equilibrium-focused and static older institutionalisms posit as insurmountable. Discursive institutionalism is not a replacement for historical institutionalism, rational choice institutionalism and sociological institutionalism, but rather a complement to them. The theories and methods of discursive institutionalism have been gradually applied and developed in many fields.
