On Sidney Shapiro's Translation of The Plains Are Ablaze:A Narrative Conversion Perspective

文章从中英小说叙事规范差异入手,探究沙博理《平原烈火》英译本在叙事结构、叙事视角和叙事话语三个层次的转换,认为沙博理在国家翻译实践目的和英语读者取向之间做出巧妙平衡,其叙事层的创造性转换实现了交际效果,并保留了原著的文学性,对当今中国文学"走出去"具有借鉴意义。

This paper, based on the different norms of narrative strategies between Chinese and English novels, makes a thorough examination with respect to narrative structure, narrative focalization and narrative discourse.It is found that the narrative conversions in Sidney Shapiro＇ s English version are a result of strate- gies balancing between institutionalized translation and reader-orientation, reaching a better effect of communi- cation.The authors argue that such narrative conversions could be a model for Chinese literature ＂Going out＂.
